Presentation

In this beautiful church we are a treasure waiting to be discovered! Fifteen modest paintings painted on wood and hung around the nave like the Stations of the Cross. One of us has a clue to our origin: at the bottom of a painting of the Nativity you can read: "Joachim pinxit anno 1627". A researcher from Troyes, among the really good sleuths, found various traces in the registers which make it possible to say that we come from the brush of Joachim Duviert, officer of the king, painter and servant of Mgr of Luxembourg, resident in Vendeuvre, who died in Châtillon - on-Seine in 1648. Henry of Luxembourg (1583- 1616), the Prince of Tingry, Duke of Piney, Baron of Vendeuvre had perhaps brought back this Duviert from one of his expeditions to Flanders or Holland on behalf of the king Henry IV In the years 1609-1614, Duviert accompanied his master throughout France and brought back very skilful drawings of different towns that were to make him famous. They are now housed in the French National Library.

This information will help you understand our presence in this church. Ten years after the death of his master and two years before his marriage in Troyes to the widow of a merchant dyer, Joachim offered us to decorate his parish church.

We represent the Fifteen Mysteries, Decades, of the Rosary. When saying the fifteen decades each decade is headed by an Our Father. The Joyous Mysteries are: The Annunciation, The Visitation, The Nativity, The Presentation and the Finding of Jesus in the Temple; The Sorrowful Mysteries: The Agony in the Garden, The Scourging at Pillar, The Crowning with Thorns, The Carrying of the Cross, The Crucifixion; The Glorious Mysteries: The Resurrection of Our Lord, The Ascension of Our Lord, The Descent of the Holy Ghost on the Apostles, The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary into Heaven and The Coronation of Our Lady as Queen of Heaven. Each of Duviert’s paintings is beautiful despite the sometimes-clumsy restoration.

Joachim certainly had a good reason for undertaking such a large work with such skill for his church. Was it because of an outbreak of one of the many plague epidemics, a family event, or of the creation of a Confrery of the Rosary in Vendeuvre? The Pope Pius V had established the commemoration of the Rosary on October 7 following the defeat of the Turks at Lepanto (October 7, 1571).
